- Ice Navigation in Canadian Waters is published by
the Canadian Coast Guard (Department of Fisheries
and Oceans) in collaboration with Transport Canada,
Environment Canada and the Canadian Hydrographic
Service.
- The Charts and Nautical Publications Regulations
require this publication to be carried on board if the
ship is making a voyage during which ice may be
encountered.
The publication was last updated in 1999.
New Edition
- Ice Navigation in Canadian Waters has recently
been revised to reflect changes to regulations and
general content.
- The new document is now organized in 5 chapters:
- Icebreaking and Shipping Support Services
- Regulations and Guidelines
- Ice Climatology and Environmental Conditions
- Navigation in Ice Covered Waters
- Ship Design and Construction for Ice Covered
Waters
A draft version is currently available for review
on the Coast Guard site:

- Please submit your comments to: pierre.darcy@dfo-mpo.gc.ca.
- The Canadian Coast Guard intends to publish the
new edition in August 2012.
- The new edition will be available only in electronic
format online free of charge.
- A paper version of the document will no longer be
available.
