  • Ice Navigation in Canadian Waters is published by the Canadian Coast Guard (Department of Fisheries and Oceans) in collaboration with Transport Canada, Environment Canada and the Canadian Hydrographic Service.
  • The Charts and Nautical Publications Regulations require this publication to be carried on board if the ship is making a voyage during which ice may be encountered. The publication was last updated in 1999.

New Edition

  • Ice Navigation in Canadian Waters has recently been revised to reflect changes to regulations and general content.
  • The new document is now organized in 5 chapters:
    1. Icebreaking and Shipping Support Services
    2. Regulations and Guidelines
    3. Ice Climatology and Environmental Conditions
    4. Navigation in Ice Covered Waters
    5. Ship Design and Construction for Ice Covered Waters

  • The Canadian Coast Guard intends to publish the new edition in August 2012.
